My new favorite lookout place: the bar on top of the Mark Hopkins hotel. The bar opened in 1939. Up there, many WW-II sailors drank last toasts to the Golden Bay Bridge visible in the distance below -- before shipping out to the Pacific Theater. There was a tradition: a sailor left a bottle in care of the bartender, with the positive injunction to pour a free drink for the next sailor who asked for it. The sailor receiving the last drink from the bottle was supposed to purchase a new one.
