A modern journalist is a "jack of all trades". Since I have always been interested in photography, I picked the brains of every professional press photographer, cameraman and photo journalist I met. Soon I began to carry my own camera equipment on my writing and research assignments. Photojournalism, science and nature photography are highly specialized fields demanding skills I greatly admire. I am happy to admit that my equipment and expertise have certain limits. I would not even try to compete with the "pros". But on many assignments, no one is available on short notice, or there is no budget for a second person. Being able to take my own pictures has two advantages: First, I may be able to achieve a better match between words and pictures. Secondly, I can often save money for the publication. And finally, even if there is no budget to dispatch a photographer along with the writer, I am not forced to rely on PR shots or stock photographs.
